What to bring?

It can be risky if you don’t have the right equipment. Take the worry out of walking by reading through our checklist.

The Basics

  • Hiking Boots/Walking Shoes
  • Hiking Trousers (loose-fitting), never wear Jeans!
  • Lightweight Waterproof Coat
  • Waterproof Over-Trousers
  • Lightweight backpack (20L to 40L)
  • Warm hat (bring all year round)
  • Gloves (bring all year round)
  • Packed lunch and snacks
  • Hiking Socks (wool is best, bring a spare pair too)
  • Foldable Sitting Mat
  • Camera
  • Phone
  • Money (for car sharing, food/beverages afterwards, etc.)
  • Small First Aid Kit (emergency foil blanket, plasters, tick removal tool, bandages, antiseptic etc)
  • Hand Sanitiser
  • Note: Avoid cotton, synthetic or wool is best.

Plus the following in…

Warm weather

  • Lightweight Fleece
  • Synthetic Sports/Hiking T-shirt
  • 1.5 Litres Water (min)
  • Sun Lotion
  • SunGlasses
  • Sun Hat/Cap

Cold weather

  • Medium to Heavy-weight fleece
  • Warm Baselayer Top (merino wool is best)
  • Warm Baselayer Trousers (merino wool is best, very cold only)
  • 1 Litre Water (min)

Optional

  • Walking Poles
  • Gaiters (helps keep your feet and lower legs dry in snow, wet grass and bogs)
  • Neck Gaiter/Buff (helps keep neck and face warm in winter)
  • Small Head-Torch, in case we return in darkness/low light (winter)
  • Small Flask for a hot drink
